Pocket watch Horloge

The images on this watch allude to the marriage of the future Dutch stadtholder William II and Mary Stuart, the daughter of the English king. On the top of the case the royal couple looks at the mythological princess Ariadne, and on the bottom Neptune is taking them across the North Sea to the Netherlands. William may well have given Mary this watch as a wedding present.

De voorstellingen op dit horloge slaan op het huwelijk van de toekomstige Nederlandse stadhouder Willem II en de Engelse koningsdochter Maria Stuart. Boven op de kast kijken zij naar de mythologische prinses Ariadne; op de onderzijde vervoert Neptunus hen over de Noordzee naar de Nederlanden. Dit horloge zou heel goed een bruidsgeschenk van Willem aan Maria geweest kunnen zijn.
