De kostuummakers van mijn favoriete films en series

De eerste keer dat ik de website bezocht van Siam Costumes, was naar aanleiding van een lezing van Roy Verschuren. Hij gaf aan dat je op hun website talloze originele kleermakersboeken en modeplaten kon downloaden. Meteen dezelfde dag zocht ik de website op en raakte urenlang verdwaald in de boekendownloads: ik heb ze nog steeds niet allemaal kunnen bekijken!

Pas later zag ik voor welke films en TV-series Siam Costumes de kleding heeft verzorgd en ik was totaal van mijn sokken geblazen. The Hobbit, Anna Karenina (met Kiera Knightly) en Crimson Peak om er een paar te noemen. Daarnaast heeft Siam Costumes de kostuums gemaakt voor figuranten van honderden films, TV-series, maar ook cabaret, cruiseschip-entertainment en meer.

Een bezoek aan het atelier in Bangkok stond dus hoog op mijn to-do-lijstje van onze aanstaande vakantie in Thailand. Ik zocht contact met de eigenaar en oprichter van het bedrijf, Daryll Kent-Morris, die zo vriendelijk was om mij te ontmoeten voor een interview. Eenmaal in Thailand aangekomen arriveerde ik na een zenuwslopende zoektocht in hun atelier en hoofdkantoor.

Kleding van theater tot Hollywood kostuumdrama

Ik ontmoet Darryl in de entree van het atelier en hij vertelt mij over de oprichting van zijn bedrijf.

Siam Costumes bestaat ondertussen al 25 jaar. Na eerst een bedrijf voor herenmaatkostuums in Londen te hebben gerund, waar hij o.a. samenwerkte met Angel Costumes, zette Darryl een bedrijf op in Singapore voor het vervaardigen van historische kostuums, operakleding en traditionele kleding voor advocaten en rechters, die gebruikelijk zijn in Groot-Brittannië. Na een paar jaar verhuisde Darryl naar Thailand, waar hij zijn vrouw ontmoette en nu werkt hij met zijn twee zonen in zijn vestiging in Bangkok.

Tegenwoordig is Siam Costumes gemiddeld met zo’n zes tot negen projecten tegelijkertijd bezig en projecten variëren van kostuums voor een kleine theaterproductie tot honderden kostuums voor een grote film. Het atelier in Bangkok heeft 30 vaste medewerkers die de patronen tekenen, de kleding snijden en naaien. Een extern atelier van nog eens 30 medewerkers wordt ingeschakeld voor de grotere projecten.

Darryl legt uit dat de ontwerpen voor de kostuums worden gemaakt door ontwerpers die zijn ingehuurd door de producties zelf. Meestal sturen zij hun ontwerpen naar Siam Costumes, waar Darryl de ontwerpen verder uitwerkt en geschikte materialen kiest. Soms komen ze echter in persoon op bezoek om alles door te bespreken en samen de materialen uit te zoeken. Samen kijken zij dan hoe zij vorm kunnen geven aan de productie; wat er mogelijk is en welke materialen hiervoor gekozen of zelfs speciaal gemaakt moeten worden. Echter heeft Darryl door zijn jarenlange ervaring onfeilbaar gevoel gekregen voor de interpretatie van de opgestuurde ontwerpen.

De patronen worden gemaakt op basis van opgestuurde maten van de artiesten, maar als er voor een film bijvoorbeeld een stunt double gebruikt wordt, dan is het belangrijk dat de hoofdacteur en stuntman of –vrouw zoveel mogelijk op elkaar lijken. In dan geval wordt er vaak gewerkt met een toile van beide.

Een tour langs mijn favoriete films

Tijdens de rondleiding door alle ateliers zijn de medewerkers aan het werk voor een nieuwe filmproductie en achter hen hangen posters van films, TV series, opera’s en theaterproducties waar tot nu toe aan is gewerkt. In een opslag met proefstukken, die worden bewaard voor herhalingen van bepaalde producties, hangen prachtige kostuums, die het oog voor detail, mooie materialen en de wow-factor van Siam Costumes perfect illustreren.

In totaal bezocht ik de ateliers waar de patronen werden getekend, stof werd geknipt en hoeden werden versierd, maar ook de stoffendepots die daarnaast gelegen zijn. Hier liggen honderden balen stof opgeslagen, die wereldwijd worden ingekocht. Vanwege de bijzondere kwaliteiten, kleuren en prints, die moeilijk verkrijgbaar kunnen zijn, worden de stoffen soms ook ingeslagen voor toekomstige projecten.

Een fijne balans van vaardigheden

De werkruimtes en opslag van Siam Costumes laten niet alleen zien hoe goed zij zijn in wat ze doen, maar ook wat een enorme diversiteit aan kostuumtypes zij kunnen bieden. Van historische galakostuums en couture tot de meest gedetailleerde militaire kleding: niets lijkt te ingewikkeld! Enkele dingen, zoals schoenen, metalen harnassen, korsetten en onderkleding – een vak apart – worden níet op locatie vervaardigd. Daarnaast wordt sommige specialistische versiering, zoals goudborduurwerk en versiering met soutache (zoals op militaire kostuums) in externe ateliers aangebracht.

Voor het niveau dat Darryl hanteert is zijn atelier is het erg belangrijk dat zijn medewerkers de juiste kennis en kleermakersvaardigheden bezitten. En omdat er geen opleidingen tot klassiek kleermaker zijn in Thailand, laat Darryl hier meesterkleermakers, van bijvoorbeeld The Metropolitan Opera, overkomen om deze vaardigheden bij te brengen aan de medewerkers van Siam Costumes.

Het was een echte eer om een volledige rondleiding te krijgen door de ateliers en stoffendepots van Siam Costumes. Ik was al zeer onder de indruk van alles dat ik online over ze had gelezen, dus ik was ontzettend blij dat ik een bezoek mocht brengen aan hun atelier. Maar waar ik helemaal van ondersteboven was, was de diversiteit in het werk en de hoeveelheid kostuums die zijn geproduceerd over de jaren. Elke keer als ik nu een film of TV serie kijken vraag ik mij af of ik naar de creaties kijk van Siam Costumes!

The first time that I ended up on the website of Siam Costumes was because Roy Verschuren mentioned this website in one of his lectures for Mode Muze, explaining I could download 19^th century tailoring books. I immediately visited the website on the same day and spend many hours downloading a part, yes I still haven’t been able to download them all, of the books and looking them over. Only later on did I check out what the company was all about and was completely amazed. Every movie or series I have seen and love was mentioned as a client of this all round company. The Hobbit, Anna Karenina (with Kiera Knightly) and Crimson Peak just to name a few. Siam Costumes has making costumes for extra’s of hundreds of movies, TV series, cruise entertainment, cabaret and more. Before I had anything planned for our trip to Thailand, I knew I wanted to come into contact with their office in Bangkok. Darryl Kent-Morris was kind enough to agree to an interview and after a nerve wracking TukTuk trip thru the heavy traffic of Bangkok, I arrived at their atelier and head offices.

Costumes from theater to movies

Darryl is the owner and creator of Siam Costumes, which has been in business for over 25 years. After owning a company in London making tailored suits for, among other clients, the London Opera and working for Western Costumes , Academy Costumes and Cosprop. A company was started in Singapore with an atelier making historical costumes, opera costumes as well as the traditional clothing worn by judges and barristers in the UK. After a few years Darryl moved to Thailand where he met his wife and now works with his 2 sons in his Bangkok based business. Siam Costumes handles between 6-9 projects at 1 time, a project could be for a small theater production, a choir, cruise ship entertainment ranging towards hundreds of outfits needed for extra’s in movies. The atelier situated in Bangkok has around 30 workers patterning, cutting and sewing clothing. Another 30 workers on other locations assist with larger projects. Designers send their designs to Darryl to work out, sometimes coming in person for consultations and sourcing materials together. When it comes to stunt doubles for movies, toiles are often send out for fittings to make sure that both actor and stunt double look alike on screen. All other work is being done on the measurements taken from the actors, opera singers and entertainers, patterned by inhouse workers.

A tour thru all my favorite movies

Darryl took me on a complete tour of his atelier were people were busy making costumes for yet another movie. Walking up and down staircases filled with movie posters was exciting, I recognized so many of my favorite movies. We went thru rooms just for the cutters, pattern makers, hat decoraters and a room filled with samples made for several productions. These samples serve as examples of precious work which may need to be repeated, seamstresses would then be able to have a good idea what they would need to replicate. Beautiful costumes with lots of details and stage presence. The starting point of every order begins with designs being sent to Darryl and conversations with the designer. Trying to understand what the designer has in mind, finding the right materials, often without the designer or the extra’s being present in the atelier in Bangkok. Darryl’s many years of experience helps in him in finding and using the right materials for a good visual representation on screen or stage. Materials are sourced all over the world and many rooms and storage spaces are filled with fabrics for any historical period, set or design. We talked about how hard it is to find fabric that is both affordable and reads well for historical representations. The design, feel but also colour of a fabric can totally ruin a movie if not well chosen. Historical accuracy is up to the designer of the movie or production and a good knowledge of a proper silhouette and look is necessary to make sure actors blend into the story of the movie or while performing on stage. I took a peek into the bookcase outside Darryl’s office which had many of my favorite books on tailoring, historical fashion and construction. But also, military wear spanning several periods, general history, couture and design.

A balance of skills

We talked about what the atelier would make for the entertainment industry and the list is too long to mention in 1 blog. The only items not made were shoes, metal armor, corsets and underpinnings. Some embellishments such as gold work on military outfits was outsourced to a specialist atelier. Because of Darryl’s background, he knows how important it is to have people working for him who know tailoring construction. A school for tailors does not exist in Thailand that teaches classical tailoring techniques, so it is necessary for master tailors/pattern cutter, from for example from The Metropolitan Opera, to come over and do a masterclass for the ladies and gentlemen working in the sewing rooms. It’s important to not only keep these sewing techniques and knowledge alive, but to keep applying them to the making of costumes for the quality Siam Costumes is famous for.

It was such an honor getting a complete tour thru the workrooms and gorgeous fabric and haberdashery stock rooms from Siam Costumes. I was impressed by what I have read about Siam Costumes on the website and was excited to be able to visit them, however I was absolutely blown away with the expanse of work they have actually done over the years. Every time I watch a movie or series nowadays I wonder if I am looking at work done by Siam Costumes!
