The 19th century was an exciting and turbulent era of dramatic social change. Buying and wearing up-to-the-minute fashions became an ever more important way for both the established elite and nouveaux riches to affirm their social status.

Couturiers, department stores and the growing garment industry found a growing and affluent clientele. The female fashion silhouette changed constantly. Men’s clothing became increasingly sober, depending for its effect on perfect cut and meticulous tailoring. Specific children’s clothing styles started to appear. The nuances and subtle variations in dress by which the well-heeled sought to show their individuality reveal a surprising amount about life in the 19th century.
